Description: The scene is the lobby of a rundown hotel so seedy that it has lost the "e" from its marquee. As the action unfolds, the residents, ranging from young to old, from the defiant to the resigned, meet and talk and interact with each other during the course of one day. The drama is of passing events in their lives, of everyday encounters and of the human comedy, with conversations often overlapping into a contrapuntal musical flow. In the resulting mosaic each character emerges clearly and perceptively defined, and the sum total of what they are-or wish they were-becomes a poignant, powerful call to America to recover lost values and to restore itself in its own and the world's eyes.

Character Gender Role Size Min Age Max Age Description
Mr Katz M 30 40 The hotel manager. Firm and wary and at times more than a little weary.
Mrs Oxenham F 40 50 The day desk clerk-phone operator.Firm; quick speaking with no commerce.
Bill Lewis M 25 35 The night clerk. Large-featured, a handsome but not aggressive face. He covers his difficulty communicating his feelings for the Girl with a kind of clumsy, friendly bluster.
Paul Granger III M 18 25 A student. Angular and taut. His tenor voice is constrained by anxiety, he speaks and moves sporadically. Clear complexion.
Mrs Bellotti F 45 60 The mother of a former tenant. A sigher. Complains to get her way, she is a whining fighter.
Mr More M 60 80 Craggy, with a cracking voice. Morse moves slowly, with a great energy and a sense of outrage.
Millie F 60 80 A retired waitress. Elegance marred by an egocentric spiritualism.
April Green F 30 50 A prostitute over thirty. A large and soft pragmatist with a mellow alto laugh and a beautiful face.
Suzy F 25 35 A prostitute. She is hopelessly romantic and hard as nails.
Jackie F 20 30 Jeans, boots, her name written on the back of her denim jacket. Her manner, voice, and stance are those of a young stevedore. To her humiliation, she is, under the manner, both femininely vulnerable and pretty.
Jaime M 18 25 Jackie's brother. Pale, small, and wiry. A little slow (one suspects browbeaten). Alert but not quick. Always listening to his sister.
Cab Driver M 20 60 Cab driver
Delivery Boy M 18 25 Delivery boy
Suzy's 'John' M 18 50 Customer of prostitute.
